Louisiana Busted Mugshots Through LAVNS

The Louisiana Automated Victim Notification System, known as LAVNS, is the most common way to find busted mugshots in Louisiana. More than 50 parishes use this system. It runs through VINELink and gives the public free access to jail rosters with booking details. Each parish has its own LAVNS page. The format is simple. Go to the parish name followed by lavns.org. For instance, Acadia Parish uses acadia.lavns.org. You can browse inmates by the first letter of their last name, filter by recent bookings, or sort by time in jail. LAVNS shows the name, date of birth, race, gender, arrest date, charges, bond amount, and custody status for each person booked into the parish jail.

LAVNS also lets you sign up for alerts. You can register to get notified when an offender's custody status changes. The system is available around the clock. You can call 866-528-6748 to speak with a live operator any time, day or night. LAVNS supports calls in English, Spanish, French, and Vietnamese.

The Louisiana State Police Bureau of Criminal Identification keeps the state's central criminal history records at 7919 Independence Blvd. in Baton Rouge. Full criminal history reports are not open to the general public under La. R.S. 15:587. But booking data and jail rosters are a different thing. Parish sheriffs post that data freely because it falls under the Louisiana Public Records Act.

How Parish Sheriffs Post Busted Mugshots

Each of Louisiana's 64 parishes has a sheriff who runs the local jail. The sheriff's office handles bookings, maintains inmate rosters, and decides how to share that data with the public. Most parishes use LAVNS. But several larger parishes run their own custom systems. Jefferson Parish uses the JPSO Online Inmate Search where you can look up inmates by last name, first name, date of birth, or booking number. Caddo Parish has its own inmate lookup portal showing mugshots, charges, bond amounts, and release dates for current inmates and those released within 72 hours.

Some parishes go further. Lafayette Parish publishes a daily arrest report that lists every booking by date. Their new jail management system replaced the old JADES platform in 2024. Calcasieu Parish runs its own inmate roster that updates throughout the day with mugshots, charges, and bond info. Orleans Parish uses the OPSO Detainee Search for current detainees, though they do not publish a full public mugshot database.

Louisiana Clerks Portal for searching busted mugshots and arrest records

Under Louisiana Revised Statutes 44:1, arrest records are public records. Agencies must respond to records requests within three business days. That is the law. But the way each parish shares busted mugshots online varies. Some post photos right on the roster page. Others need you to file a formal request.

The Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections runs the state prison system. Their offender locator lets you search by DOC number or by name and date of birth. The system updates every 24 hours. It shows the inmate's location, housing assignment, facility address, contact phone, and projected release date. This tool covers state prison inmates only. It does not show people held in parish jails or municipal lockups.

The Louisiana Clerks' Remote Access Authority is another state resource. LCRAA was set up in 2014 to give the public access to clerk of court records across all parishes. Pursuant to La. R.S. 13:754, all clerks of court must take part. The basic portal is free. It covers civil suits, criminal case indices, and marriage records. For full document images, you go to the individual clerk's website or use the Clerk Connect subscription service.

Louisiana Revised Statutes 44:4.1 places restrictions on commercial websites that publish mugshots. Commercial sites cannot charge fees for mugshot removal. This law targets businesses that profit from booking photos. Government agencies can still charge reasonable fees for copies. A typical mugshot copy costs between $5 and $25 depending on the parish.

What Louisiana Busted Mugshots Show

When you pull up a busted mugshot record in Louisiana, the data you see depends on the parish and the system they use. Most rosters share a standard set of fields. You get the person's full name, date of birth, race, and gender. The booking date and arrest date are listed. Charges appear with bond amounts and court case numbers. Many parishes also show the arresting agency, current custody status, and release date if the person has been let go.

Booking photos show up on most parish rosters. Not all parishes display them online though. Orleans Parish, for example, does not publish a full online mugshot database. You would need to file a public records request to get a booking photo from OPSO. The fee runs $5 to $25 per photo. Jefferson Parish charges $10 per mugshot through their records department at 1233 Westbank Expressway in Harvey.

Getting Copies of Busted Mugshots in Louisiana

There are three main ways to get arrest records in Louisiana. You can go in person, send a request by mail, or use an online portal. In-person visits are the most reliable. Walk into the sheriff's office or jail records division and ask for what you need. Bring a valid ID.

Mail requests work too but take longer. Include the full name of the person, their date of birth if you have it, the date of arrest, and your contact info. Most parishes accept email requests now as well. Lafayette Parish takes requests at recordsrequest@lafayettesheriff.com. Rapides Parish charges $10 for the first page of a report and $1 for each page after that. Background checks range from $5 in Rapides Parish to $50 in Jefferson Parish. Each parish sets its own fee schedule so call ahead to check.

Under La. R.S. 44:9, people arrested for non-violent crimes can petition the court for expungement. If granted, the court orders the destruction of those arrest records. That means some older busted mugshots may no longer be available even through a formal records request.

Louisiana Arrest Record Laws

Louisiana's Public Records Act under La. R.S. 44:1 defines public records broadly. It covers all documents used in connection with public business. Arrest records and warrants fall under this law. Any person can request them. You do not need to give a reason. Agencies must respond within three business days.

There are limits though. Active investigation files may be exempt. Victim information in sexual offense cases stays sealed. Under La. R.S. 15:587, full criminal history reports are restricted. Only the person named in the record, law enforcement, or authorized agencies can get those. But jail booking data, roster listings, and mugshots from parish jails are treated as standard public records. That is why most parishes post them online for free. La. R.S. 40:2401 gives the State Police authority to maintain the criminal history database through the Bureau of Criminal Identification. Name-based checks cost $26 plus a $5 technology fee. Fingerprint-based checks run $39.25.
